Wine drinkers 'cutting back on spending' - 20.11.08

Consumers are cutting down their expenditure on wine in the current economic downturn, it has been claimed.

Gavin Partington, a spokesperson for the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has noted that people are "reigning back" their spending on the alcoholic beverage.

The number of purchasers shelling out more than five pounds on a bottle from a retailer has dropped, while wine drinkers in pubs or restaurants are now expecting to pay around £12, he stated.

Mr Partington remarked that people are "feeling the pinch" and "looking to adjust their spending accordingly" in the wake of the credit crunch.

His comments come after a Wine Intelligence survey of 1,000 regular drinkers conducted on behalf of the WSTA found that the amount of people typically spending five to six pounds on a bottle in a supermarket has fallen from 22 per cent to 17 per cent.

Additionally, the number of on-trade buyers - meaning people purchasing a bottle from a bar - that were paying £12 or under increased from 48 per cent to 55 per cent.
