Curry enthusiasts urged to create healthy dishes - 20/11/08
As National Curry Week approaches, lovers of the spicy food are being urged to cook healthier versions of popular dishes.
Heart Research UK is looking to encourage people to produce less cholesterol-inducing types of curry and return to the cuisine's traditional healthy values.
The health of a person's heart could be affected by curries that are high in saturated fat as well as salt, the charity warned.
However, cutting out or using less of ingredients such as meat, cream and ghee can make them more heart-friendly.
The organisation suggested replacing meat with fish - such as mackerel or salmon - or using leaner cuts to reduce fat.
And nutrients can be added to the mix by introducing vegetables like tomatoes, aubergines or butternut squash, it noted.
National Curry Week is taking place over the last week in November.
Weight Watchers states that although traditional Indian food is healthy, the British version of it tends to have more fat and cream.
