Consumers in Britain are taking a growing interest in the sourcing of their food, it has been observed.
Alexia Robinson, organiser of British Food Fortnight, suggested that people in the UK are becoming "a little bit more like the French and the Italians", since goods are no longer simply seen as convenient and mass-produced.
"I think the values that people now care about are seasonality, freshness, quality, high animal welfare standards and of course in this current economic climate - price," she added.
Ms Robinson's remarks come ahead of next month's event, which celebrates and promotes food produced in the UK.
Pubs and restaurants have been invited to run tastings and special menus, while chefs will offer cooking classes in schools.
Research by IGD has found that the freshness of locally-sourced food is the main reason people will choose it, while 44 per cent hope to support local producers.
